Leicester Blue Sox are delighted to announce their new management team as we begin preparations for the 2021 season.
The Sox have appointed Matt Deacon and Scott McMillan as joint head coaches of the adult first team. The duo will bring their own exciting brand of enthusiasm and experience to Western Park as we look to bounce back after a frustrating 2020, where local Covid restrictions ruled out baseball in the city for the majority of the regular season.
Leicester have also joined the independent West Midlands Baseball League (WMBL) this season, which will include teams from across the region including Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Worcester, Telford, Stourbridge as well as our local rivals Long Eaton Storm.
On their appointment as joint head coaches, Deacon said “After being at the club for 4 years, and with the exciting news of moving to the WMBL, I’m excited to get stuck into coaching the first team alongside Scott. We had some friendly games last year where we tested the water of our partnership, and I cannot wait for the long overdue return of baseball at Western Park!"
McMillan added “It is an absolute honour to be appointed as joint head coach of this ball club that I love and adore so dearly. I witnessed the birth of the Blue Sox back in 2006 at the age of 17 and to see how far this club has come since then makes me immensely proud to be part of its history. I look forward to working alongside Matt in forming a successful management duo and leading our club into its debut season in the WMBL!"
There are also some changes behind the scenes, with the recently rebranded Blue Sox “Front Office” now replacing our previous committee structure. Executive Chair Brett Melville and General Manager Matt Crawshaw will be charged with leading the strategic vision of the club and handling off the field matters during our 15th Anniversary season.
Due to ongoing pandemic restrictions the WMBL has deferred the start of their regular season until the first week of June at the earliest. This should mean that a decent pre-season can be planned for May with field renovations and spring training scheduled to take place in April...all being well!
Player registration for the 2021 season will open shortly and as always the Blue Sox are looking to grow their roster with plenty of room for both established players and enthusiastic rookies.
